What Will You Learn About Studying Arboriculture

An arborist has an important job of providing professional advice on tree care.

  • Tree removal techniques – aerial rigging, free-falling or tree felling

  • Stump removal techniques include digging it out, stump grinding, burning it, rotting it away and chemically removing it

  • Installing irrigation systems for garden

  • Traffic management when there is large tree removal occurring

  • Aerial rescue

  • Complex tree climbing across different tree species

  • Preparing and applying chemicals for different tree species

  • Power source safety and how to navigate tree management services around power lines and power sources, including planting trees near power lines

  • Selection and culture of trees, plants and shrubs and being able to identify their differences and benefits

  • Soil-related issues for trees and soil rehabilitation

  • Business units relating to running your own business as an arborist – office practices, business operations, management and marketing

  • Controlling and managing roots that are affecting underground pipes

The study of arboriculture is generally coupled with a practical workplace project to ensure skills and knowledge are at the level they need to be to become a professional, certified arborist.


It’s not just the knowledge and understanding of these topics, it’s being able to actually do the arborist tasks in real life.
