What To Plant In Winter

Winter is a time when many trees lay dormant, or go to sleep - and as such, can be the perfect time for tree pruning or hiring someone for tree trimming services.

In Sydney and the Northern Beaches region, winter is typically quite cold with an average temperature hovering around the low to mid teens.

Days can still be quite sunny however there are fewer daylight hours and some inland areas can get frosty.

If you’re thinking about tree planting over winter, make sure you don’t spend precious time tree planting if it’s not the right time.

Spend a bit of time researching and joining online gardening groups to throw around ideas and get further advice.

What Can I Plant In Winter?

Winter is a time to harvest your traditional winter crop and start thinking about the upcoming spring season and seasonal vegetables, fruits and plants.

The sowing and planting of new crops into soil that dips under 12 degrees at night, or less, isn’t ideal for new seedlings so keep this in mind. New seedlings need a lot of sunlight so consider the garden bed location and if it suits before planting.

Try to get your tree planting done before the cold really sets in to give new plants a chance.

However, if you’re an avid gardener and want to continue seed or tree planting year round, another alternative is an indoor area with seed trays that retains warmth to provide a better environment for new plants. Think about veggies such as onions, carrots, potatoes and spinach.

Herbs you can consider are thyme, parsley and oregano.

Planning For End Of Winter

Another thing you can do, is start to get prepared on what you can plant at the end of winter. If you have a plan, you’ll be ready to go when the time is right.

Keep in mind the sowing to harvest timeframe. If you sow seeds in the coldest time of the year, the crops when they are ready for harvest may not be able to withstand the warmer temperature.

Other Tasks To Do In the Garden During Winter

There’s no need to completely abandon ship on your garden through winter, there’s heaps of stuff you can do. Repot or move trees that would be otherwise flowering, whilst they are in their dormant state.

Trim your trees or get pruning too.

Another good one is weeding. During winter you have more chance of killing off weeds before they germinate.

Start collecting and storing compost, or adjust your irrigation system to a reduced rate to match the watering requirements of your trees, plants and shrubs throughout the winter cooler temperatures.

Remove trees that are dead or diseased.
