Tree Pruning In Summer

Ever considered pruning trees in summer? Well, it is a thing, but it needs to be done with the right advice in mind.

Summer tree pruning in the Northern Beaches can mean your trees look less full next fruiting season – just something to note, so go easy if you choose to prune!

Although more intense tree pruning is done in the winter, or dormant months, tree pruning in the Northern Beaches in summer can be done for selected trees such as fruit trees like stonefruits, for example, immediately after fruiting.

Trees that can benefit from summer pruning:

- Fruit trees

With proper thinning techniques, fruit quality and amount can be improved with gentle summer tree pruning in the Northern Beaches.

- Any tree with dead branches

Leaving dead branches on a tree can drain the tree of its nutrients so lop it off and let the tree focus on what’s alive and thriving instead.

- Sappy wood trees

All trees have sap and the sap in the tree starts to rise with warming temperatures in late winter to early spring, so one of the things you can do to avoid this is to prune your sappy wood trees in early summer instead. That way, less sap comes out.

Other reasons you can choose to prune your tree in summer include if there is structural damage to the tree by way of its branches or the tree is just way too big.
