So You Want To Be An Arborist

Also known as a tree surgeon, an arborist is someone who is a specialist in the care and maintenance of trees.

An arborist is also a professional in the practice of arboriculture, which is the cultivation, management, and study of individual trees, shrubs, vines, and other perennial woody plants.

If you’ve ever considered becoming an arborist and wanted some more info on what they actually do day to day, you’ve come to the right place!

There are different levels of arborists which define what they are certified to do.

The common thread of an arborist’s job and their designated practical tasks is tree maintenance services, tree cutting services, tree planting, tree pruning and tree removal across a variety of tree species.

A Day In The Life Of An Arborist

Arborists spend most of their time assessing trees, consulting with people on solving tree problems and performing the actual tree work itself.

Depending on the arborist’s specialty and experience, some may offer services like landscaping or tree health reports in addition to the general tree focused jobs.

You might be wondering, is there any paperwork involved in the job?

If you run your own business as an arborist as opposed to working for someone, then you’ll have some paperwork or admin that you’ll need to take care of too.

Naturally when running your own business, there are going to be computer or admin tasks such as invoicing or general business paperwork which might take you away from the actual arborist duties.

Arborists spend most of their time outdoors amongst trees and nature, so perhaps don’t pursue this line of work if you prefer being indoors or working on a computer/desk environment!

Levels of Arborists

Arborists are rated by the Australian Qualifications Framework, according to their level of training and knowledge.

A Level 3 Arborist has completed the minimum requirements in theoretical and practical tree assessment and care and are qualified in climbing aspects of arborist work. A Level 5 Arborist has more extensive training and spends most of their time completing tree reports.

It’s also important to note, not to confuse a certified arborist with a tree lopper. A tree lopper does not have any qualifications when it comes to performing safe tree removal or pruning. Never be afraid to ask your arborist what his AQF level is if you’re unsure.
