Preparing for Autumn

Now that we’re well into Autumn, you’ll start seeing a difference in the appearance of your garden and the trees within it. The days start to get shorter, and the end of daylight savings is just around the corner.

It’s a good time to reassess your garden as a whole - your trees and their maintenance in Autumn whilst also taking into account the upcoming Winter season. Some tree's leaves will start to change colour and go yellow and eventually fall off.

Maybe you’re wondering what sort of preparation you can do around your yard for the Autumn season - maybe it’s time for a good clean up, some pruning you’ve been meaning to do or perhaps you need to get a professional arborist in for some tree maintenance services.

Whatever you do decide to do, it’s a good idea to map out a plan on what you’re hoping to achieve so you can work towards your overall garden goals.

Let’s take a closer look at what you can do to prepare your yard for Autumn.

Overall Tidy Up

When trees start shedding their leaves, you’re no doubt going to end up with a bit of a cleanup job. Trees and gardening can be a very rewarding and fruitful exercise, but when the Autumn arrives, it can be a time of tidying up and maintenance. Take the time to attend to cleaning up the leaves and assessing other general tidy up jobs around the yard.

Prune Hedges & Trees

The colder months are an ideal time to prune because trees start to go into a sleep-like, dormant state when the leaves have fallen off. This ultimately causes less stress when pruning them. Utilise this time during Autumn to plan out which hedges and trees you’ll prune, as the removal of the leaves will also give you greater visibility of the tree and its structure, making the job easier.

When considering pruning, if the tree is too big or you’re unsure how much to prune, you should consider the services of a certified arborist and tree specialist in the Northern Beaches.

Find New Trees or Flowers To Plant

Given the weather conditions in Autumn, it’s an ideal time to start planting new trees or flowers as it’s not as harsh as the summer heat, and generally, the soil is warm enough for plants to start establishing before it’s too cold in Winter.

Plan Which Trees & Plants To Repot Or Move

As you’re mapping out what new trees and flowers you’re going to plant, you can also get an idea of which trees you want to repot or move when Winter does eventually roll around. Similar to pruning, since the trees are in a dormant state, it’s a good time to repot or move trees and shrubs.

Consider A Veggie Patch

The colder months are the perfect time to start growing vegetables and herbs. Hearty vegetables such as cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, beetroot and parsnip are just some of the delicious veggies you can plant and look forward to harvesting.

Mulch Your Garden

A good prep tip for the upcoming colder months is to mulch your garden in Autumn in order to assist with protection from the cold and insulation of the roots.
