Looking After Trees and Your Garden Over Winter

As the months roll on by, we now find ourselves very close to the cold, winter months here in Sydney and the Northern Beaches.

Although we find that many trees go ‘to sleep’ over winter, it doesn’t mean that we can neglect our trees, plants or garden during this time.

Winter is a good time to reassess your outdoor area – are there trees that need branches removed? Are tree trimming services required, or some general tree pruning you’ve been putting off?

Consider the species of trees you currently have and whether now is a good time to map out what each of them need to maintain optimum health and vibration for the rest of the year.

Any larger style tree jobs you should consider consulting with an arborist like Northern Beaches Arborist.

Tree Branch Removal

The colder months can leave your tree branches stressed and brittle - and at risk of breaking and falling, so be on the front foot when it comes to assessing the trees in your yard.

Weekly inspections of the trees, their branches and overall general structure can help prevent a branch falling before it occurs!

An arborist in the Northern Beaches can also assist with bracing a branch that is compromised or recommending and performing tree removal if it’s too far gone due to disease or damage.

Tree Pruning

Given the absence of leaves, winter is an ideal time to attend to tree trimming or pruning as the tree branch structure is more visible and clearer to work with.

Pruning and trimming in winter is also less likely to upset the new growth of a tree, given its winter hibernation state. Pruning can cause some stress to a tree or plant so make the most of the colder months and plan ahead!

Mulching

With the onset of the winter months, invest in some basic mulching for trees in your yard to help protect and insulate the root structure from the cold.

A certified arborist can advise you further on which trees you can and should mulch, and what the best type of mulch to use is.

Weeding

Although it’s not every gardener’s favourite job, winter is a great time to get some weeding in as it’s a good idea to keep on top of it at all times of the year.

Once those pesky weeds establish themselves, they become harder to remove as time goes on. So take the time now to weed around your trees and garden in time for winter, so you’ve got a clean slate by the time spring arrives.

Another key tip with winter garden and tree care is to always remember to continue to water your trees throughout winter as they still require nourishment.
