How To Look After Trees During Heavy Rain & Storms

Updated: Apr 7, 2022

The recent weather on the east coast of Australia has certainly been a very testing time for many. The heavy deluge has left some communities and properties completely destroyed – many with garden damage and trees that have fallen or looking worse for wear.

Not only does this result in a lot of clean up work, it can be very dangerous with the potential for large trees to drop branches or even fall over completely, causing damage to humans or property in close proximity.

Unfortunately, we may not be out of the woods just yet with the heavy rain, so it’s a good idea to have a plan in place for your garden and how you will look after it during extreme weather or flooding.

Northern Beaches Arborist, located in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, has extensive experience in tree maintenance services and can assist you if there’s an emergency tree issue arising from a recent storm or weather event.

Being prepared and on the look out for changes in trees around your yard is vital – let’s discuss some of the things you can do to be prepared during an extreme weather event.

Inspect Trees For Loose or Broken Branches

This is especially important if you have very large trees that overhang yours or your neighbors’ houses and is one of the key ways of identifying risks.

Conduct regular inspection of trees and its branches and check they look intact. Any damaged, broken or hanging branches should be removed as soon as physically possible to eliminate potential risks.

Always keep in mind that it’s never advisable to remove large tree branches by yourself, especially if you don’t know what you’re doing. Look into engaging a certified Arborist for tree cutting services in the Northern Beaches, who will ensure the branches are removed correctly without causing further damage to the tree or surrounding property.

Regular Pruning

Pruning a tree correctly will ensure the tree stays healthy and vibrant. Removing deadwood and excess means the tree can focus on keeping the healthy branches in peak condition. This is especially important should rain or flooding occur as it sets the tree up to be in its best condition to survive.

Remove Diseased Trees

If you’ve got a tree and you’re unsure about its condition, an Arborist can assess and provide feedback as to whether it’s diseased and therefore if it should be removed. A diseased tree has an obvious health issue and won’t be able to withstand extreme weather or flooding.

Northern Beaches Arborist can complete your tree removal in the Northern Beaches Council area and is fully insured and certified.

Some tree species are protected so it’s a good idea to double check with your local council if the tree you have in mind can be removed.

Anchor Young Trees

Using stakes for stability for young trees can assist with tree survival and protection if there is a storm, winds or severe rain conditions.

You can add a few stakes near the trunk of the tree and use rope or string to join the tree with the stakes. This will prevent strong winds from breaking the tree or blowing it right over. Please ensure you don’t insert the stakes too close to the tree - leave some room for breathing space between the tree and the stakes.
