Common Tree Diseases in Sydney

It’s not a friendly or happy sight if you discover one of your beloved plants is disease-ridden.

It can happen at any time and when you least expect it.

If you’ve discovered trees, plants or bushes in your garden that have become infected, an arborist in the Northern Beaches can assist with professional advice and possible solutions.

Sometimes simple things can be done to assist the tree, like removal of the diseased leaves or a pesticide spray, but other times, entire tree branch removal or tree cutting in the Northern Beaches will be the only way.

Although tree branch or full tree removal sounds harsh, leaving a diseased tree unattended can also invite the problem to spread and affect other trees that are close by.

Today we’re going to look at some of the tell-tale signs and things to look out for when inspecting your trees to ensure they aren’t diseased, along with some of the most common tree diseases in Sydney.

How and When To Inspect Your Trees

You don’t need an arborist in the Northern Beaches to initially inspect your trees, you can check them quite easily yourself.

Take a good look at your trees every 2-3 weeks so you can make a note of any marked differences in its overall presence.

Look for things such as unusual pests or fungi growths on the branches and leaves of your trees and check for discolouration of the foliage, trunk and bark.

Any cracking or peeling of the bark of the tree could also indicate a problem and some tree branch removal in the Northern Beaches may be in order.

Common Tree Diseases

Although there are strict rules around biosecurity for Australian borders, some flora diseases have still been introduced over the years:

- Myrtle Rust

First detected in 2010 in NSW, myrtle rust is caused by a fungal pathogen called Puccinia psidii. It causes yellow powdery spots to appear on a plant’s leaves. It eventually turns brown or grey before killing the leaf. An arborist in the Northern Beaches can help to treat and control myrtle rust with a fungicide.

- Root Rot

This is where there is decay of a plant’s root system and therefore can be hard to recognize or diagnose given it starts underground. If untreated, it can kill the plant or tree as it’s a gradually decaying disease.

Generally waterlogged soil is a key reason for root rot to occur.

- Pink Disease

A fungal pathogen, pink disease can affect many different tree species. The pathogen grows through spores being produced and then spreading. Once infected, the disease spreads and can look like pink spots on the tree.

Trees in close proximity to the diseased tree also have a risk of pink disease spreading to them. An arborist can identify all sources of pink disease and complete tree branch removal on the infected branches in the Northern Beaches.

- Peacock Spot

This is a fungi that affects olive trees, not just in Australia, but all over the world. Blotches can be seen on the leaves which can reduce the crop, delay ripening and overall stunted tree growth.

There are other tree diseases that exist, however these are just a snapshot of some of the most common ones here in Sydney.
